When to use
The Factors are primarily intended for use in spend-based Scope 3 GHG accounting and reporting.
Use the "With Margins" emissions factors when you have not gathered data on the transportation of products or service providers separately. If you have gathered this data, then calculate the emissions from transportation separately and use the "Without Margins" emissions factors.
Limitations
Factor values are calculated using a model that assumes all vendors, commodity sourcing, and other supply chain participants are US-based. This likely introduces some inaccuracy due to the global nature of a modern supply chain, and makes it challenging to determine emission differences in supply chain activities that are shifted to countries with lower emissions-generating sectors.
